Case Study: Blink Point

Brief

The design team of this 7 storey speculative office building in Central London had set demanding criteria for the lighting. For maximum marketability they wanted good LG7 light distribution and low energy consumption. This was to be expected, but the restricted 65mm of available ceiling void was unusual. The designers wanted a fitting that could give this performance without hanging too far below the ceiling plane so as to maintain the clear 2.6m ceiling height. The fitting also needed to work on a wide spacing to allow for the other services and to take return airflow at 30l/s.

Design

Clearvision proposed the Kallista LV (Low Void), which could work within this minimal void, but still offer the light distribution type recommended under the LG7 guide (CIBSE). The fitting only dropped 33mm below the ceiling line, but could still work on a wide spacing. The variety of lens options offered flexibility for different potential tenants. Finally and vitally it was a very efficient fitting that could handle return airflow. The MTX microprismatic lens option was selected for its neutral appearance.

Completion

Kallista LV fittings using the MTX lens option and a high colour temperature (6500k) linear T5 HE lamp. The high circadian factor of this lamp helps with the ergonomics and the good uniformity of this lens ensures good light distribution. The general ambient lighting uses under 6w/m2, one of the lowest energy schemes of its type in London.
